Visited (again): Richard Avedon exhibit at the DIA

It's been gray for more days than I can count and today's sunshine paired with a trip to the DIA has got me back on track. About a month ago, I went to the Richard Avedon show at the DIA. I was so taken with it that I went back today for a second look.

Having had the luxury of a leisurely walk through the quiet gallery a few weeks ago, I was able to focus on the ones I really liked this time. I found myself returning to his photos from the late 40s and early 50s, especially the Dovima ones.

I also loved this from the exhibit notes to a photo of Dorian Leigh in a Dior hat: "The model sits in a train compartment, weeping as if saddened by her departure. Avedon was pleased with the photograph, but his editor was not. She rejected it, declaring "Nobody cries in a Dior hat."

Thinking about Paris and springtime and really lovely Dior dresses has made the gray fade away. If you're in town, it's on until January 17; if not here's a nice slide show from the New Yorker
