Mighty Curtis at the Bat: Game 3 of 22

Summary:
Score: Oakland A's 9 Tigers 5
Temperature: 78 o
Attendance: 38,923
Winner of the Dunkin' Donuts Race: Cuppie Coffee

At the end of the first inning, today's game looked done like dinner. Each of the first five Tigers hitters scored making it a 5-0 game. Half way through the top of the 2nd, my neighbour said, "we've got ourselves a ball game." By the end of the second inning, it was 5-5 and, while there were lots of great chances, the Tigers couldn't topple the A's. As I noted in my entry last night, each game I'm more and more impressed with Curtis Granderson. I spent most of today's game watching him. Granted, he is cute as a button, smart and articulate but he's also lithe, precise and elegant to watch. Watching him trying to steal a base, I notice he almost floats above the base. At the plate, time seems so slow down when he swings. In center field, again, he floats and time stops around him. I'm also starting to realize what it is about baseball that I like: I like that it is a narrative that can be captured and retold on a score card and I also like its visuals. I am struck by how so often the field is like a tableau vivante. In part, I'm taking so many pictures because I'm still sorting out what this cool digital camera can do but I'm also really drawn to the field as a canvas and the players' positions as a form of design on that canvas. Most of my photos from today are attempts to capture the above described qualities of Curtis; I've posted them on Flickr.
